Aim of the studio

About our Studio

_Investigation and goals

In this studio we are taking a critical look at both the term and the process of urbanisation. The so-called urban will be investigated by examining the traces of the gradual spread of Tallinn over time and in space, concentrating on the ever shifting edges: the lands between the “urban” and “rural”. The studio’s aim is to dig deep into that dichotomy and look at its particularities both very locally and also in wider regional and
global context, while addressing existential questions posed by the precarious conditions under the continuing multi-faceted global crises.

Paljassaare Pilgrimage

_First intermediate event, students divided in groups

On a Sunday morning, we invited people on a Pilgrimage, into the heart of Paljassaare. The pilgrimage promised a four-hour hike into the (un)known places, weaving through the peninsula's pasts, present, and futures. They were about to experience a blend of academia, nature, and sensory exploration.

Gathering at the Laevastiku quarter's playground area, the first group gave an insight into Laevastiku. With an interactive presentation at the area’s central playground, offering insights into the potential growth of the quiet village of Laevastiku subdistrict, the group delved into the local community's perceptions of change, presenting analyses from a qualitative survey on the site.

Paljassaare Kaleidoscope

_Final event with individual outcome

Embark on a journey through the 'Paljassaare Kaleidoscope' event, held on the 9th and 10th of December 2023. A tapestry of 15 projects unfolded, each unveiling a unique facet of this extraordinary peninsula. Wander through the gendered nuances of birding, exploring our intricate relationship with nature. Feel the pulse of eco-anxiety resonating with ecological challenges and environmental shifts. Venture into the labyrinth of urban water circulation, confronting the looming risk of floods. Unearth the stories embedded in the soil mountains surrounding the water treatment plant. Read more and see our projects...
