PALJASSAARE PILGRIMAGE_Interim event

On a Sunday morning, we invited people on a Pilgrimage, into the heart of Paljassaare. The pilgrimage promised a four-hour hike into the (un)known places, weaving through the peninsula's pasts, present, and futures. They were about to experience a blend of academia, nature, and sensory exploration.

Gathering at the Laevastiku quarter's playground area, the first group gave an insight into Laevastiku. With an interactive presentation at the area’s central playground, offering insights into the potential growth of the quiet village of Laevastiku subdistrict, the group delved into the local community's perceptions of change, presenting analyses from a qualitative survey on the site.

For the following stop, we continued along the old rail tracks, as the participants went on an audio-pilgrimage titled "Value in Valueless." Guided by historical information and future plans, they engaged in a sensory experience, creating awareness to the value that exists in the otherwise often judged as valueless.

The Pilgrimage took a break in the border between the water treatment facility and the nature protection area on a plastic tarpaulin to mime the artificial created land - something that Paljassare also is. Here, we had the immersive audio picnic "Noisy Nature", where participants reflected on the quietness and seclusion of Paljassaare. Some questions were posed , such as: “How can we preserve Paljassaare as it is now and what is our duty, as humans, towards nature?”. Themes of preservation, human duty toward nature, and the evolving landscape were discussed against the backdrop of the peninsula.

The Pilgrimage reached its end with a scavenger hunt next to Kaelajärv, the wasteland at the heart of Paljassaare. Drawing inspiration from Donna Haraway's theories, the group explored the connections shaping the land. Questions about the distinction between human and nature, past, present, and future resonated as the participants uncovered the forgotten facets of this central space. As the Pilgrimage concluded, the group gathered around a symbolic representation of Paljassaare – a colossal chocolate pudding, resembling the mud and soil that binds everything together and where everything joins at once. This sweet finale encapsulated the essence of the day, highlighting the interconnectedness of the diverse facets discovered during the expedition.

The Paljassaare Pilgrimage was more than a hike through physical landscapes; it was a multidimensional exploration of ideas, perceptions, and the symbiotic relationship between urban development and nature. Perhaps, the event left participants with a newfound appreciation for the complexity of Paljassaare and with more questions, but also a sweet taste lingering on their palates, symbolizing the unity of all the elements that make this strip of land a unique and complex entity.
